Janelle Monae on the Cover of Billboard

As a singer, songwriter, producer, performer and fashion icon, Monáe is one of the most unique mainstream musicians America has seen in years, and "The Electric Lady" co-produced with two of Wondaland's artists, psych-punk act Deep Cotton and soul composer Roman GianArthur -- underscores that her personal compass is worth trusting. On April 23 she released lead single "Q.U.E.E.N.," a freaky funk jam with Erykah Badu, with the accompanying video garnering more than 4 million YouTube views in a week. (The track has sold 31,000 copies, according to Nielson SoundScan.) No small feat for a clip that promotes guerrilla art, critiques institution, advocates self-love and features coded language from the vogue scene ("ooh, she's serving face") in the first bar, before ending with a pro-equality rap referencing sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. There's always something deeper going on in a Monáe song.

Rest in Peace "Antonio Benito Wilson II"

Graphics by August Riche
This past weekend New York City was under attack and it wasn't terrorism. Over 20 people were shot and some unfortunately lost their lives to senseless, unnecessary gun violence including a dear person and friend of mine. "Antonio Benito Wilson II" Antonio was one of the coolest dudes you could ever meet. Standing well over 6 feet tall he seemed intimidating but was the complete opposite. Killed by a stray bullet trying to protect someone else Antonio died a hero. I wish his family and anyone who had the pleasure of encountering such a graceful soul much peace. Rest in Paradise Homie you will be missed...

CEASE FIRE.

Lauryn Hill - “Neurotic Society"

Among the IRS Lauryn Hill also has beef with liars or people who refuse to be themselves. Lauryn dropped a new song last month and has this to say about it.

“Neurotic Society is a song about people not being, or not being able to be, who and what they truly are, due to the current social construct. I am not targeting any particular group of people, but rather targeting everyone in our society who hides behind neurotic behavior, rather than deal with it."
